#2 Sziget Festival Guide: Arts and Theatre
wednesday, july 20th, 2016 / Editors
The island of Freedom offers more than just music. It is a festival that lasts for seven days and it takes over a whole island in Budapest. This is one of the reasons why Sziget is full of entertainment from art, theaters, magic and anything you can think of. Here a guide to Art and Theater programs at the festival.
#1 Art art art
A festival is not the same without art! The Sziget festival grounds are filled with art installations, sculptures, decorations, light installations, etc… Well basically the whole island is transformed into a whole different world with an artistic vibe. While you are strolling around seeing some art installations on the island you will discover for example decorated trees, light path decorated with clothes. Each object is created and designed especially for Sziget. Szitizens can take a moment to discover an interactive piece of art to invent a new melody on the so known Xylobamboo, by drumming the hanging sticks against the bamboo tubes.
#2 Acrobatic wonders
Entertainment plays a great role at this festival, particularly the ‘Cirque du Sziget’. It has about 8 exciting shows a day and the performances are impressive to watch. We guarantee you that there is a fun interacting in the crowd and who knows maybe you will be picked to be part of the outdoor show. Les Dudes are not the usual jugglers, but imagine a show where people and puppets are flying up in the air one after each other. It’s a great urban street circus and the two Canadians will be delighted to see your mind beeing blown away by their tricks. The program starts everyday at 16.00, so you can catch up with them any day!
#3 Movies and innovative talks
It doesn’t surprise us that the festival continuously offers a Sziget Cinema and a TEDxBudapest tent. The cinema is a relaxing place where you can take it easy and rest while watching the most popular Hungarian movies which do include English subtitles. Whereas the TEDxBudapest involves discussion where opinions and viewpoints meet. Talented young people will be sharing their ideas and innovative thought and products. Sziget gives them an opportunity to be heard and you are able to meet up with them. There are different programs scheduled each day, take part in it if you are interested in creative ideas that can be part of our life.
#4 It’s showtime
The Transe Express Mù is from Thursday till Monday at 11.15 and a must-see at Sziget. It’s a giant Street Theatre Show that combines music, circus skills, fire, literature, visual arts, dance and yes, theatre. A great escape of reality and the show brings the audience deep into a creative mindset and magical imagination. Besides this you will most probably bump into other funny looking characters that are marching around.
#5 Drag Queen Show
Ready for something a little more unusual and for some good time? The Berlinesque Cabaret at the Magic Mirror venue will definitely get you laughing with those unexpected moments. A show with boylesque, queer and hetero will spice up your experience at Sziget. See it with you own eyes as it is worth watching. The Trip by Berlinesque Cabaret from Friday till Tuesday at 11 PM.
