A38: The Hungarian podium for Dutch bands

A38: The Hungarian podium for Dutch bands

friday, april 8th, 2016 / Editors

Club A38 might sound familiar to you already, perhaps due to the big tent at Sziget or through the location of the Warm-Up Party. But did you know that last year more than 80 Dutch bands were performing in the main hall of the floating club on the shores of the Danube? Due to the special characteristics the Club A38 in Budapest provides the perfect place for live music for bands like Kensington, De Staat and Dope D.O.D. Photo: Bart Heemskerk.

Downtown Budapest on the west side of the Danube, you can find the renovated Ukrainian carrier ship that is converted into one of the most unique venues of Hungary. The nearly fifty-year-old ship was given a new life in 2003, as a cultural center. It was expanded over the years including a restaurant, an exhibition hall and a bar.

Many international acts that tour around Central Europe add A38 to their tour, besides it attracts many Dutch bands. In recent years more than 80 Dutch bands performed in the main hall, including De State Dope D.O.D, Moss, Nits, Noisia and Kensington who even reached 1st place in the Hungarian charts. A38 has a strong relationship with Melkweg, a club in Amsterdam. Almost every month a Dutch band performs on stage with the help of Zsuzsa Bende and Mister Melkweg, Cor Schlösser.

A38 at Sziget Festival

A38 will be hosting a large stage at the Sziget Festival: known under A38 tent. This stage certainly draws much attention to the Dutch bands. Previous years bands such as Jett Rebel, Chef’ Special, De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig, De Wolff, Kensington, De Staat, Dotan, Typhoon and Blaudzun performed there. This year Opgezwolle and Kovacs take part as well. Kensington and Chef’Special return this year too and list this as one of the best experiences. Yet, many unknown bands get great feedback from other countries too, as the ambience attracts many non-Dutch into the A38 tent.

Sziget Warm-Up Party

The Sziget Warm-Up party will be celebrating the night before Sziget begins in the A38 venue. This years it is on Tuesday, August 9 2016, so save the date! Many performances occur at several locations (the big hall, the upper deck and a smaller club room). This edition includes Graham Candy, Bombay, Rilan and the Bombardiers, LOLA and Mikey Nice. Tickets (€12.50) and more information can be found on the Sziget Festival Page. Keep yourself updated with the latest news on the Facebook Event.

Practical information

A38 is open day and night. It is easily reachable by tram 4-6 that runs every 3 minutes during the day and every 10 minutes during the night. Address: Petőfi híd, budai Hidfo / Petőfi bridge, Buda side, Budapest, 1117.

Curious how Kensington experienced Budapest last summer? The music video ‘Done with it’ shows their trip and performances during the Sziget Warm-Up Party and Sziget Festival itself.
